Thank You, Rachael – Six Wonderful Years at WMC

This term we say a heartfelt goodbye to Rachael Whawell, our much-loved Director of Junior Strings, who is leaving Wirksworth Music Centre after six years of inspiring teaching and leadership.

Rachael joined WMC at a challenging time – right as Covid restrictions began. When group playing was able to return, she faced much smaller numbers, but with determination, positivity, and enthusiasm, she rebuilt the Junior Strings into a thriving group once again. She also launched Taster Strings, giving many of our youngest members their very first experiences with a violin and sparking a love of music that continues as they progress through our ensembles.

In her own words, Rachael says:

“It has been an absolute privilege to work with such talented, enthusiastic young musicians and to watch them grow in confidence and musicality over the years… Their joy, energy, and commitment has been truly inspiring, and I’m so proud of all they’ve achieved. I will always hold fond memories of my time at Wirksworth Music Centre and am excited to see the junior strings groups continue to flourish in the capable hands of those who follow.”

Rachael’s warmth, vitality, and encouragement have touched both students and colleagues alike, and she will be greatly missed on Saturday mornings. From all of us at Wirksworth Music Centre — thank you for your dedication, your music, and your friendship. We wish you every success in your future teaching and adventures.
