Update at 1 March 2021

We are currently making plans for how to restart Wirksworth Music Centre after its long suspension – longer than we or anyone had hoped.

And we are now excited to say we have begun a trial of running online band sessions, with an online orchestra for senior wind and string players, a mixed junior wind band, choir sessions and sessions for young music makers.

When it comes to re-starting the Music Centre in person, we’ve been talking to our venues and getting to grips with the risk assessments, procedures and other changes needed to hold music rehearsals safely.

As safety is paramount, we won’t restart until we feel everything is in place to keep students, teachers, volunteers and families safe.

When we do start up again, we are planning for a soft start, where sessions will likely be shorter in duration, at different times to usual, and with smaller group sizes, all so we can maintain safe social distancing. It may not be possible for every student to attend every week, but we are investigating alternatives that could make virtual rehearsals possible.

If you are interested in coming to Wirksworth Music Centre for the first time either online or in person, or as a returning student, and have any questions at all, please do get in touch with us.

We rely on volunteers to run our music centre and it looks likely we will need more help now to ensure everyone’s safety. If you are able to help, either on a Saturday morning or a Tuesday evening, please get in touch.

At Wirksworth Music Centre we know how enjoyable it is for children to come together to make music with their friends. Wirksworth Music Centre is a place where school age children can join a group to learn and make music in a fun and friendly atmosphere during term time, you will find the current list of dates here.

We have a wide variety of groups to choose from, all of which are led by professional musicians and teachers, designed to suit each group’s ability and provide lively and engaging sessions. The teachers choose a dynamic mix of musical styles so that the children gain a great range of skills and experience.

There is a group suitable for your child’s level of playing from beginners to advanced performers, here’s a flavour of what’s on offer:

  • Young Music Makers – for Reception to Year 2, to learn the basics of music through games, singing together and starting to play an instrument
  • Recorders
  • Brass and Woodwind
  • Strings
  • Guitars
  • Youth Choir

For an up to date and detailed list of our current groups take a look at the different pages on our website.

For brass, woodwind and strings, children will usually need to be taking lessons in the instrument they want to play in the group. If you need help to find a teacher for individual lessons, please contact our Music Coordinator.

A great community feel…

Music Centre is a welcoming and friendly organisation rooted in its community – we give concerts at the end of each term where friends and family can enjoy the children’s hard work. We also like to offer varied activities such as trips to see professional orchestras and organising specialist workshops with professional musicians.

The Centre is run by a committed group of volunteers, with all parents, carers and friends very welcome to help at any weekly session or concert!
