Wirksworth Music Centre was started in 1993 by music co-ordinator Jenny Acons, also music teacher, director and trustee of the organisation. And since then it has continued to thrive, providing opportunities for local, school-age children to come together to make music. A team of teachers, trustees, directors and volunteers ensures the young musicians can enjoy developing their musical abilities and acquire new skills out of school hours, while making new friends and gaining confidence as they progress.
There is a wide variety of groups to choose from, all led by professional musicians and teachers, and designed to suit each group’s ability and provide lively and engaging sessions. The teachers choose a dynamic mix of musical styles so that the students gain a broad range of skills and experience.
WMC is a friendly, inclusive organisation, giving concerts at the end of each term for family and friends, to provide an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their enthusiasm and progress, playing in ensembles and singing in the choir.
The Music Centre is a welcoming and friendly organisation rooted in its community, giving concerts at the end of each term where friends and family can enjoy the children’s hard work.
Varied extra activities are offered when possible, such as taking trips to see professional orchestras and hosting specialist workshops with professional guest musicians.
