Jenny Acons founded Wirksworth Music Centre in 1993 and has been an integral part of all its operations ever since. Jenny is the Music Centre Coordinator working closely with the Ensemble Directors and Trustees to keep Music Centre running smoothly and successfully. Jenny also directs our Junior Recorder ensemble.

She started playing the piano, recorder and cello as a child, and moved on to study music in London – she was one of the first people to study for a Bachelor of Education degree – taking Music and Psychology.

Jenny moved to Wirksworth with her husband Ken in the 1970s and worked at Anthony Gell School for many years as a Music and Special Educational Needs Teacher.

Jenny decided to start Wirksworth Music Centre as there was no other provision for young people to come together to play music in the area, her four children all played string instruments and were keen to be part of the new venture.

She has a real passion for young people playing music, especially ensemble playing. She derives real joy from seeing young people playing music together and gaining in confidence and skill. Jenny also set up and administers the Wirksworth Music Lessons Fund supporting young people whose families have difficulty funding their music lessons.
